How did our company get its NAME?

The owner, Lora Lee, is of Norwegian and Danish descent, so "Scandinavian Handicrafts" merged into "Scandicrafts". Our logo is the traditional red and white woven heart that is made from paper and hangs on Christmas trees throughout Scandinavian countries during the holiday season. (See the upper right corner of your screen.)

Some of our products are influenced by Scandinavian traditions and culture, while others are not. All items, however, are produced with great attention to detail and are carefully made by hand, reflecting the values of Scandinavian design.

ABOUT ... LORA LEE

After spending decades earning a living as a Statistician, I recently retired and now have the opportunity to exercise my creative abilities in a more personal way. I've always loved to sew, and have enjoyed designing my own clothing. When I lived in New York City I worked for a while as a seamstress before starting my studies at Columbia University in the field of Mathematical Statistics.

Many women, both young and old, are interested in working around the house and yard. After my father passed away, I found myself doing odd jobs for both myself and my mother. Many times I would wish I had an adequate apron or tool belt to wear, that would aid me in these tasks. For instance, when hanging curtain rods near the ceiling, I'd constantly be going up and down the ladder for hammer, nails, etc. Then I put on an old shop apron that belonged to my father, and the tasks became easier. I could keep the tools in the apron pockets so they were within reach.

When I looked for aprons and tool belts at local hardware stores, those items always had a masculine appearance. I did some research and found that I can fill a need that is not met by existing products: to create items that are both attractive and functional. I have designed a variety of aprons, in hopes of offering quality goods to suit several needs, including kitchen, garden, crafts, carpentry, waitress and hostess. Each item is different, and they all have pockets!

I asked my friends if they needed anything I could make for them, and they came up with other suggestions. For a musician, I made a special tote bag for taking to gigs that would hold thick notebooks for music, a water bottle and a folding music stand. A massage therapist now has several holsters to wear around the waist, to keep lotions and oils within easy reach. An elderly friend uses a pouch with pockets I made to hang over her walker so she can easily take objects from room to room. If YOU have a special need, send me a message and I'll be happy to discuss it with you. Let me know how I can improve your life!
